I was born in Tahlequah Oklahoma at Hastings Hospital and grew up in Tahlequah and raised my family here as well and have always considered myself a very lucky man to have been blessed with the life I was given. I was presented the honor of being named a Cherokee National Treasure in September of 2021 for Cherokee Blowgun and Darts (Traditional Weaponry) is the title given to encompass all of Cherokee Nation Weapons. I think in my case it is an accumulation of a lifelong pursuit, My life has always followed along the path of the Cherokee people and their lifestyle of kindness and teaching. My Grandparents both Maternal and Paternal were full blood Cherokee with that being their point of pride and this is where I learned that being Cherokee comes with a sense of responsibility to educate people how the Cherokee differ from other Native tribes and different races of people. My jobs that I have had through the years have always included the service of the Cherokee people and displaying the Cherokee lifestyle and History and how the Cherokee learned from their experiences and chose to retain them to avoid making those some mistakes as the tribe grows and progresses.

Charles’s development began through education, cultural activity, working in the construction industry, pastoring, coaching, and being coached. Born at the beginning of World War II, transitions began quickly moving from Sallisaw, Oklahoma to Portland, Oregon, where his parents found employment in the ship yards. When the war ended, the family moved to Bakersfield, California where he still resides today.
The journey from apprentice to business owner included time serving the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union at multiple levels. Charles has works as an adjunct instruction at the local community college and is a National Judo Champion, which has helped anchor his life in disciplines requiring endurance and patience. This has enabled him to assist those struggling with life issues and its responses.
Being an ordained minister for thirty years was itself, a life teacher, and set in place the foundation for today, living in balance. Today the honor being acknowledged locally and by the Cherokee Nation as an elder and spiritual advisor only reflects a path any can follow.

Born and raised in Fort, Gibson, Oklahoma, Melissa experienced first-hand the impact of what occurs when a community’s social, economic, and political concerns are ignored by local and state institutions. As the daughter of Rodslen Brown King, also a remarkable force for change, Payne matured to become an advocate for others that were not able to stand up for themselves or whose voices were muted by the pain of neglect and oppression.
In her early twenties, Melissa embraced the opportunity to serve on the board of Project A Association, an Oklahoma-based nonprofit assisting troubled children and the elderly in the local community.
Melissa, a Cherokee Freedman descendent, has and continues to embrace the full scope and history of her heritage. A lifelong student of Cherokee Freedman history, she’s led numerous community-driven events and celebrations of her ancestry, each highlighting the contributions of native residents. She has served on committees tasked with the development of exhibits at Cherokee Nation Historic Museum, specifically "We are Cherokee." She also had the opportunity to work with a team out at Rose Cottage, who advanced an investigation of the unmarked graves of former slaves of the Cherokee Nation. Her efforts are now reflected in the great work performed as the president of Project A Associate.
